In the seven years since California’s red flag law went into effect, it has been credited with deterring at least 58 potential mass shootings. But what are red flag laws? Dr. Amy Barnhorst, associate director of the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program and California Firearm Violence Research Center and UC Davis health psychiatrist, explains how gun violence restraining orders (GVRO) work, how they prevent gun violence, and how people can obtain a gun violence restraining order in California if they are concerned someone is at risk of harming themselves or others.
