ABSTRACT

The United States has experienced an unprecedented surge in homicides — the vast majority of which involve firearms. Mass shootings, however they are defined, are also increasing. Firearm suicide rates, in contrast, have remained stable. To understand these developments, it’s important to see where they came from. What are the long-term trends? What state and regional patterns exist in mortality and in firearm-violence prevention policies?

ABOUT THE DASHBOARD

This data dashboard lets readers explore long-term trends in gun violence, along with the state and regional patterns in both mortality and firearm-violence prevention policies that underlie those trends. Explore the data in a variety of ways, by:

  • State (alphabetical or ranked) or US total
  • Year (1981-2020)
  • Total numbers or age-adjusted rates
  • Intent (homicide and legal interventions, suicide, mass shootings) or total deaths
  • State firearm laws (background checks, child access prevention, concealed carry permitting, domestic violence, extreme risk protection order, assault weapons)

Note that the data dashboard was last updated in 2022.
