New op-eds from Dr. Wintemute and Dr. Kagawa
Inside our July 2024 newsletter
In this issue: Research is at the forefront of what we do, and we are constantly looking for ways to share findings and inform the public. This past month, two VPRP faculty wrote about the implications of their research as they relate to current events. Both op-eds are on the short side, and we invite you to give them a read!
- In “Who is 'engaged in the business' of selling firearms?” (MedPage Today, 6/23/24), Dr. Rose Kagawa discusses a new DOJ regulation that clarified the scope of activities requiring a federal firearms license, effectively expanding background check requirements. This quiet change, she writes, may have big implications for safe firearm transfers.
- In “Could political violence determine the outcome of this year’s elections?” (The Hill, 6/21/24), Dr. Garen Wintemute shares data illustrating the risk of political violence and urges readers to actively and publicly reject it.
Other topics covered:
- The U.S. Surgeon General's declaration of gun violence as a public health crisis
- The BulletPoint Project's 3A's Framework for Firearm Injury Prevention Counseling
