Gun violence awareness

Gun violence awareness

Inside our June 2023 newsletter

In this issue: On June 2nd, we commemorated National Gun Violence Awareness Day to honor the victims and survivors of gun violence. Here at VPRP, we honor them through action by developing knowledge and driving change for a safer, healthier, and more equitable future.

Attaining that future by reducing rates of firearm mortality and morbidity across communities nationwide may seem daunting, but incremental change adds up. By layering policies that work together to reduce risk, California’s gun violence rates have steadily declined over the last two decades.

Learn about our work to reduce gun violence in this message from our team.

This month, we are sharing the message that gun violence is preventable – and we hope you’ll join us in sharing that message all year long.

Other topics covered:

  • New research on neighborhood collective efficacy, firearm violence and community trauma, association of medical conditions and firearm suicide, and assessing key correlates of firearm ownership.

  • Gun Violence Awareness Day of Action, hosted by Attorney General Rob Bonta and Congressman Mike Thompson and featured local leaders including Dr. Garen Wintemute.
